The Real Cost
Here is what you can expect to spend for building a 41/2' x 9' pool table with our pool table plans. Surprisingly, your cost will only be a few hundred dollars less for the smaller tables. A detailed Materials List in provided in the front of your book which specifies exactly what you need to buy. It is also helpful to know your slate is about 1/3 the cost of your table. Taxes and other surcharges are NOT included.
We show you how to make your sub rails which will save you about $80. This alone covers the cost of your book!

* Plain Slate Talk: New slate will cost you at least $550 crated, insured & freighted (not UPS!) and possibly more. We've seen claims for as little as $250 for tournament sized slate. This is not only unrealistic -- It's impossible! Slate is imported to the US in bulk (10 packs) and is fragile. It must be re-crated (add $100) and insured (add $50) for freight delivery (add $150). Some freight companies will not deliver to residential areas and require pick up at the terminal.
Your best solution is to find slate in the $300 range within a few hundred miles. Arrange to pick it up subject to your inspection and acceptance. Similarly look for used tables in the $300 - $600 range you can remove for someone. You may be able to salvage some of the parts. Take a strong friend or two and appropriate cushioning for your trip home. Local pool table businesses may sell and deliver slate to your home. If you are willing to drive a few hundred miles, you can save a few hundred dollars.
The plan books provide more guidance and what to look for when shopping for used slate/tables.
